VR90® Downhole X-Ray Diagnostic Service:
The world’s first downhole X-ray technology

Built on Visuray’s Downhole X-Ray Platform®, the VR90® tool offers a wireline diagnostic service using ground-breaking X-ray technology to provide reliable downhole imaging in any well fluid, however opaque.

A Proven Track Record

  • In a well in the Netherlands, quantitative VR90 measurements resolved fine details of a disconnected coiled tubing string, providing interactive 3D images of the target surface that enabled successful fishing operations.
  • In a well in the North Sea, VR90 images identified and measured a flapper in several positions that subsequently led to the successful installation of a wireline insert downhole safety valve enabling the well to be put back on production.
  • In another successful case in the North Sea, a VR90 tool was tractored over 1500 m to image and help recover a fish that could not be identified by conventional imaging technology.

How Does It Work?

The VR90 tool taps into the technology-busting Visuray Downhole X-Ray Platform. The VR90 tool generates X-rays in excess of 150,000 electron-volts and measures the backscattered radiation from objects and fluids immediately below the tool. The measurements are converted into accurate, measureable and recognizable 2D or 3D representations of the scanned objects.

Applications

  • Inspection of completion equipment such as valves and mandrels
  • Classification and quantification of wellbore restrictions and obstructions
  • Determination of shapes and dimensions of dropped objects
  • Identification and characterization of collapsed or split casing
  • Providing input for design of customized fishing tools
  • Inspection of fishing profiles on downhole equipment such as plugs and packers

Benefits

  • Works in all production fluids, and can image sand-covered objects – saving time and money by eliminating the need to displace well fluid, clean up or chemically condition the well.
  • Operates at temperatures up to 212°F / 100°C and pressures up to 20,000psi / 1,380 bar – providing answers in previously inaccessible environments.
  • Uses inherently safe, electronic X-ray sources – simplifying logistics.
  • Produces real time answers – enabling well-informed decisions anywhere in the world.
  • Works centered or eccentered in the well – for extra operational flexibility.
  • Runs on all types of electric wireline and is compatible with tractors and strokers.
